A Day at the Ballpark

I got a phone call from Charlie yesterday. "Do you work tomorrow?" "Nope." "Wanna go to a baseball game?" "Heck yes, I do."

Yesterday was stunning...an absolutely gorgeous day. Charlie and I were both under the (mistaken) impression that today would be just as gorgeous, and would thus be an excellent day for an afternoon ballgame. Rain was, however, in the forecast.

The rain was only momentary. It was a light, warm summer rain, and I was equipped with a hat and an umbrella, so I was ready for it. It drizzled on us a little and then left. It was still cloudy, and then even the clouds rolled away. And as the Nationals brought home a victory (8-5) over the Astros, the sun shone over RFK stadium.

We made a friend, Wayne Carroll, the attendant for our section. Wayne took that nice picture of Charlie and me, saying "taking pictures is my part-time job. This is my full-time job:" and he sat down in a box seat, flapped the towel he uses to wipe the seats, and laid it gently on his lap, ready to watch the game. Charlie and I laughed, and Wayne was proud...we had made a friend. Wayne was guarding the front most seats of section 225 (our seats were only one section up), but about halfway during the game he motioned to us to come sit in the second row near him. Baseball is awesome from up close.

RFK was pretty full for a Thursday afternoon.

Charlie and I found the Guinness man. Lite beer is SO overrated.

Charlie got me a snack. Roasted peppers and onions on a bun. I can see it now "Hey, can I have a hotdog with everything...minus the hotdog?" It was really good, though! :) I love when my friends are creative with my eating habits.

And of course, I ate it!

Charlie was upset about a play. Charlie shouts things at players as any good baseball fan should.

Wayne. "The man" in section 225.

The Nat's won, and the sun is out! What could be better than that?

Friends
I was at an audition last week, and ran into Joe Peck...the one and only. I seem to have the good fortune of running into this lovely man at most auditions in the city. We were sitting at a table chatting when he looked up at someone behind me and said "Well, look who we have here." It was Ashwee!!! She had come down from NY to move the rest of her stuff out of Sam's place and go to this audition. It was wonderful to see her...and almost surreal to have three of us tour buddies together again after a month of seperation. We all look a little happier, more relaxed, and fresher than we did at the end of tour :). Of course I had to pull out the camera and capture the moment.

Right before the wedding, literally right before I boarded the Greyhound, I got to meet up with Chiaki for lunch at Hard Rock Cafe. She, and the rest of the teachers in her core, had brought up their students for a DC trip. Chiaki was my 5th grade teacher, which was more years ago than we both like to remember. Now we are friends, sushi buddies, and soon to be DC nightlife divas (she's coming up for a visit very soon)

And Lamar...we're going on 10 years now. That's all I can say about that.

"Mawwaige. Mawwaige is what bwings us togetho today. Mawwaige, that bwessed awwangement, that dweam wifin a dweam. Wove, twue wove, will follow you fowever, and ever. . . so tweasure your wove. Have you the wing?"

I travelled down to Virginia Beach this weekend for the marriage of my friend, Sarah, to her wonderful fiance, Edric. Lamar was my lovely date (as has often been the case). Sarah was radiant and funny as hell...as always. After the pastor announced them husband and wife, she looked to all of us in attendance and gave a coy smile and shrugged her shoulders, as would a tickled 5-year-old to get a piece of their favorite candy, and the crowd laughed with delight. Leave it to Sarah to be a brilliant comedian at her own wedding.
And well, this is the first wedding I've been to for any of my friends, and I have two more this summer. Am I getting a little, shall we say, long in the tooth? :) What a great way to start the wedding celebrations off, though...a beautiful wedding with close family and friends, and two people very obviously devoted to each other in the simplest and purest sense. You always wonder if, after the hoopla of a wedding, a couple will be lost when they go back to the stillness of everyday life...sans wedding plans. Sarah and Edric? They will be just fine.

"TOAST"

Back in DC. The sun in shining, the wind is blowing, and everybody is smiling (at least until the humidity sets in).

I love this city in the spring. I never though I'd say "I love this city" period. It took a national tour and 7 months of separation to appreciate everything it has to offer.
This entry is entitled "Toast" due to an interesting event that takes place on the streets of Adams Morgan once a year. It's called "Toast" but I'd like to call it "When Law Students Go Crazy".
You know you get hungry after a night of drinking on the town...Especially someplace like Adams Morgan. So the residents of an apartment near the great strip of 18th street, that just happen to be Gtown law students, offer free toast to passers-by once a year on a warm April night. You may ask, what's the catch? There is none, my friend. Free toast, waffles, and for those of you on a Kosher diet...matza.
I was supposed to meet up with my friend, Clifton, that night...so I told him to meet me at 17th and U. He probably assumed that I had given him the address of a bar or restaurant, or some other legitimate establishment. Little did he know he would be experiencing "Toast" first hand. He was at first speechless, and then overwhelmed by a "you silly fuckin white girl" laugh attack. And then...a law student walked up to him holding a warm waffle, "Would you like a waffle?" His laughter died down as he quickly sobered up at the realization that these people weren't kidding...and this waffle was free.

Eric, Kofi, and the "Toast" table

A law student soliciting hungry people on the street. Yes, that sign was made with glitter.
We have a live one!
Clifton making his toast.
Yummy!!!!
Awww...Kofi is cute. And so is Eric!
Me and Clifton. Clifton is doing his "angry black man" look. That's what got him into NYU grad. Because there's a different face for every emotion...ain't that right, Clifton? :)
Well, thanks for reading everyone...and here's to a new blog!
